Five signs of a durable trading strategy

What to inspect in a trading history beyond a smooth equity curve and an impressive annual return.

A durable strategy is not one whose equity never declines. It is a system with an understandable source of edge, controlled risk, and a result that does not depend on one lucky month.

01

The result is distributed through time

Inspect monthly returns and the contribution of the best trades. If almost all profit came from one episode, the final curve says less than it appears. Mentally remove a few extreme winners and check whether a working structure remains.

02

Risk is bounded and rules are explainable

Before entry, it should be clear where the idea becomes invalid and how much capital may be lost. Rules need not be fully algorithmic, but entry, exit, invalidation, and sizing should be explainable before the outcome is known.

There is a loss limit per trade and per day.

Position size is not increased to hide a loss.

The reason for entry can be recorded before the result.

Rule violations are separated from systematic trades.

03

The history is diverse and execution is stressed

A calm year can generate thousands of similar observations without testing protection in a violent reversal. Look for multiple regimes, then worsen fees, latency, and slippage. If a small assumption change destroys the result, the edge is too fragile.

Key takeaway

Look for an explainable history, not a perfect one. Durability appears in a repeatable process, enough evidence, and the ability to survive hostile regimes.
